"Jesus said, 'To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it. It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sowed in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sowed, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade' ".

Mark 4:30-32

When we state that faith is a journey, we mean that it is a process that happens within us. There are sacred moments or events in this journey. The initial step happens when we experience our own powerlessness in a crucial area. We realize that we can't fix a loved one, or manage our kids, or control our drinking. We seriously have to ask ourselves if we believe that there is a greater power than ourselves to whom we can give our fears.

This initial powerlessness can create our dark night of the soul. We can experience an inner pain like no other that emerges from the hole in our soul. There is no comfort zone from which we can turn to give us relief. The path through this pain is to establish a positive relationship with ourselves which can only emanate from God's love. We grasp the truth but if we do not take care of ourselves we cannot take care of anyone else. We realize that if we don't love ourselves and take care of ourselves that we have nothing to give others. There is a big difference between being self centered and being centered on self. To be self centered is have a deep hole within us that we try always to find people, places and things to fill up. The more we get the more we want because we are never satisfied. To be centered on self means that I believe that the most important relationship that I have in my life is with myself because that is where I find my God. Hopefully, with this new attitude we are able to discover all the wonderful love that we have in our hearts that can only come from God. Then we grasped how this love makes each of us so precious. Then it becomes a natural step to treat other people the way we would like to be treated which Jesus tells us sums up the whole gospel.

Prayer for the day

Father, Help me to understand that even in my darkest moments that your love is calling me to a deeper level of surrender, knowing that your love and your goodness will never desert me nor the people that I love. We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Amen.
